Extended Access

From Saturday 1 October 2022, out-of-hours appointments will be available from 6.30pm to 8pm on weekdays, and from 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.

When we asked local people what you wanted from these appointments you told us you would be happy to travel to any of Chelmsford City Health’s practices which are all within a close proximity of one another. In response to this, we have arranged the following.  For the month of October, out of hours appointments will be available at your usual surgery with a focus on providing mainly flu and COVID vaccinations.  From November, most appointments will be available at the Baddow Village Surgery, Longmead Avenue, Great BaddowChelmsford, CM2 7EZ.

Out-of-hours appointments were previously planned by Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) on behalf of many GP practices in a bigger area. From Saturday 1 October 2022, this is now being planned and delivered locally by Primary Care Networks (PCNs).

We are working together with other GP practices in our local area as part of the Chelmsford City Health Primary Care Network. You can find out more about Chelmsford City Health Primary Care Network on our PCN website at https://www.chelmsfordcityhealthpcn.nhs.uk.

An out-of-hours appointment might not be at your regular GP surgery. When you book an appointment, you will be told where the appointment will be.

All the out-of-hours appointments will be routine and not available as walk-in appointments. You will need to book the appointments in advance.

To book an out-of-hours appointment, you should contact your regular GP practice in the usual way. They will advise you on the appointments which are available, and which healthcare professional is the right person to help you.

When We Are Closed

Extended Access Hub: If you require a GP or Nurse appointment when we are closed, there is a Mid-Essex Extended Access Hub. See section above for contact details.

NHS 111: If you need medical help fast but it’s not a life-threatening situation please call NHS 111.

When you call 111, a trained adviser will ask you questions to find out what’s wrong, give you medical advice and direct you to someone who can help you, like an out-of-hour doctor or a community nurse.

If the adviser thinks your condition is more serious, they will direct you to hospital or send an ambulance. If you don’t speak English, tell the adviser what language you want to speak and they will get you an interpreter. You can call 111 any time of the day. The call is free, from landlines and mobiles.

Call 999 in an emergency. Chest pains and / or shortness of breath constitute an emergency.

NHS 111 Online

111 online is a fast and convenient alternative to the 111 phone service and provides an option for people who want to access 111 digitally.

Your needs will be assessed and you will be given advice about whether you need:

  • Treat yourself at home
  • Go to a Primary Care Centre

If you need face to face medical attention you may be asked to attend a Primary Care Centre.
